Ayo people Im back again,
I was over at a mates place in the fine suburb of Kambah enjoying a cold crown
lager last Saturday evening and my mate brought out a mix tape he’d recently
been given free with an album he copped online.
My mate had some good words to say about the mixer plus we’re both in to that
underground local stuff so we threw it on and as soon as track one kicked in I
named the beat, it was taken from a pretty famous Nas joint.
The MC spitting over the top sure had some skill but he wasn’t Nas and I’m more
in to original music then jacked stuff so I asked him to skip to track two and
again the beat sounded familiar so we skipped, and skipped and skipped again
until we’d run through all twelve songs.
From the twelve songs I’d recognized seven beats as past hip hop hits and
classics all unchanged and probably downloaded straight from friggin limewire.
The other five could have all been ‘jacked’ too who knows.
So what’s my point?
Well in what year did it become sweet to just bite another artists shit?
I don’t care if it’s Dr Dre or DJ nobody it’s still someone else’s shit.
A sample here and there…ok but full instrumentals and song lyrics used to be off
limits.
What the hell happened?
I guess I missed something over the years.
Now don’t get me wrong I’m not hating on every MC that ever jacked a beat
because to be honest I’ve got good mates who’ve made some good songs on famous
beats and I don’t want any of you ringing me up to have a cry so don’t take it
personally.
I guess what I’m saying is that at some stage we have to draw a line in the sand
and start trying to keep it original.
We’ve got bunches of producers all over the country, actually scratch that we’ve
got producers all over the world pouring blood sweat and tears in to there craft
and they cant even get a rapper to drop a verse on there instro’s.
Get out there and collaborate guys, learn to make your own beats or buy
something original.
There’s original beats all over the net up for free download, they aint that
hard to find lads.
Look at it this way…
Any true hip hop head out there knows that over the years hip hop’s biggest
problem has all ways been cats ripping shit from each other and not being
original, it hurts the music and it hurts the culture.
To all you MC’s out there that think it helps your career to drop a track on one
of Tupac or B.I.G’s classics think again.
How well do you think the Hoods would have gone with “Nosebleed section” if it
had of been spat over one the hits of the time??
What if it was on 50 Cents “In Da Club” beat???
Do you think those cats would be selling out shows??
I don’t.
If you’re not being original as an artist then you’re not adding to hip hop
music/culture, your not hip hop.
Here’s a good example of how ridiculous this biting bullshit has become;
I had a track to write and record for a distributor I was working with a while
back, it was a nationwide free cd release and the distributor said to me “Feel
free to use an industry beat for your track”.
I was like “Whats an industry beat” thinking it was some term I hadn’t heard
before and she explained to me that her company had no problem with me using a
beat made famous by another MC, any MC as long as it had been a hit in the past.
I just laughed it off and told her I wouldn’t be using any damn “industry
beats”.
People just don’t f**king get it.
Be a dope version of yourself not an imitation of someone else.
I’m all ways on the look out for good new music but I want to hear an A grade
version of an original MC not a B grade version of one that I all ready heard.
Its 2010 lets build on the past and leave our mark for the future.
Let’s keep it certified original people.
Back soon.
